Life is not a straight line.
Life is not a plot diagram: rising action, climax, falling action.
Life isn’t even a Fate-woven tapestry. It’s a tangled knot of many threads. It’s the same with stories. As a writer, it’s my job to untangle the threads of plot, setting, and characters to give readers a discernible and relevant replica of life. As a human, it’s my job to navigate the knots of my own life.
The Knotted Plot is a record of my attempts to do those things. Here, I post my own writing: tangled, fantasy fiction works-in-progress. I’ll post the writing advice and tips I’ve accumulated through years of research. The Knotted Plot is my attempt to organize the rules of writing in templates and outlines, to categorize characters in archetypes and psychological boundaries, and to become a better writer by untangling the mysteries of writing.
My name is Allison White. I’m a student journalist for a small-town paper, and I’m an amateur fiction writer. My current WIP revolves around a teenage girl who discovers a portal to the Irish mythological Otherworld. Join me as I attempt the impossible task of untangling the Gordian knot that is writing.
